Detox Granola

Hey guys! Hope you're having a fantastic Monday. I know it's the beginning of the week, which can be a little daunting... Trust me, it's 2 p.m. and I've only just sat down to type this blog post. My morning was spent wasted trying to optimize the storage space on my mac. Only to end with both my mac and my brain succumbing to a spinning colour wheel with no signs of improvement. Where's a genius when you need one? But I'm thinking this detox granola will give us the energy to tackle our Monday head on, and make up for a little lost time. Ambien who?

I've actually posted this detox granola recipe before; as a small cameo in my coconut yogurt parfait. But I wanted to dedicate a single blog post to the beautiful blend because it's a premium granola that's so versatile and satiating. There are so many ways to enjoy this detox granola; in a granola bar form, sprinkled on smoothie bowls, or cereal-style with a bit of mylk.

So let's get down to the question you're all asking - why is this granola "detox"?

That's because each ingredient has been carefully selected; and the amount of sugar carefully thought out to bring you a healthy granola that you can feel good about eating. I'm sure you've heard the rumours that granola, although delicious, is deceivingly unhealthy. And unfortunately, there is some truth to the rumour. Store-bought granola in particular is often packed with sugar and unhealthy fats to make them tastier, resulting in only the tiniest serving becoming a calorific feast. It's savage! It's important when buying store-bought granola to pay close attention to the ingredients, and choosing blends with minimal ingredients that you understand, and to consider the amount of sugar per serving. Typically 7g or less of sugar per serving is the green light. (No i'm not a nutritionist, but this was a piece of advice given to me by one).

An even better option for having a healthful granola is to make it yourself! I'll preface by saying that I'm not a big advocate for calorie counting; to me it's about picking foods that are rich in nutrients to give our bodies what it needs to thrive. It's therefore important to be aware of what's in our food, so we can make educated choices. I love this detox granola because it's a smart choice for granola lovers. The recipe combines almonds and oats, pumpkin seeds, flaxseed, and unsweetened coconut. It's infused with cinnamon, cloves and cardamon to make it rich in flavour, and it's perfectly sweetened with a little agave. Its minimal ingredients make for a clean and wholesome granola blend. We know exactly what has gone into making this granola - meaning no blindsiding and no sugar crash. Here's to living our best life.

So if you're a granola lover looking for a healthy and wholesome blend this detox granola is for you. It's a perfect blend to satisfy that belly. It's rich in flavour, fibre, and healthy fats to give us quality energy to burn through the day. Now that's a granola I can get on board with!

Detox Granola

Makes: Approx. 5 cups granola | Prep Time: 10 mins| Cook Time: 20 mins

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (160g) almonds

  • 2 cups (240g) + 1 cup (120g) gluten-free oats

  • 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds

  • 1/3 cup shredded coconut

  • 1/3 cup flaxseed

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves

  • 1/4 tsp ground cardamon

  • 1/2 tsp sea salt

  • 1/3 cup + 1 tbsp coconut oil

  • 1/3 cup + 2 tbsp agave

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350F/180C. In a food processor blend almonds and 2 cups oats until they are finely ground. Add to a mixing bowl with remaining 1 cup of oats, pumpkin seeds, shredded coconut, flaxseed, cinnamon, cloves, cardamon, and sea salt. Mix to combine.

  2. Add coconut oil and agave to saucepan on medium heat. Stir until melted and combined. Then pour over granola mixture, and stir until well combined.

  3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Pour granola onto baking sheet, and spread evenly. Bake for 20 minutes, or until granola is golden. (I recommend to rotate pan halfway through baking to ensure it's baked evenly). Let granola cool completely. (Optional to break any large granola chunks with your fingers when cooled). Top granola on smoothies, yogurt, or serve with milk.
