Healthy Detox Tips: with SkinnyMint 28-Day Teatox

Hey guys,

This blog post is to talk to you about how to detox healthy. I'm currently undergoing a 28-day detox with the help of SkinnyMint's 28 Day Teatox. They had reached out about sending me their detox tea to try, and I jumped at the chance. If you haven't noticed already, I am a sucker for a good detox. I live a pretty healthy lifestyle as is: working out often and eating a healthy plant-based diet. But even still, there are times where I fall into ruts and feel bloated and blah.

We all have those times of indulgence, #yolo. Whether it's one too many glasses of wine with the girls, or a holiday in Italy where it's a crime not to have pizza and Aperol spritz at every opportunity; these life enjoyments are put back on track with a good detox. I also love a detox before a big event, like an upcoming wedding or vacation where I want to feel confident. So needless to say, I'm no stranger to detoxing. From a 3-day juice cleanse to a 7-day slim down meal plan, I've been mere sips away from having blended parsley coming out of my ears!

But even though I love a good detox, it's important to take the healthy approach. No diet-pills, food restricting, or 16 hour fasting. It's about taking a healthy approach to cleansing with real foods and natural remedies. This is why I was so on board with SkinnyMint's 28-day detox tea. Their tea's are all-natural, making them a healthful and safe choice to detoxing. Because although I love a detox, health is the utmost importance, and I'm not willing to put my body at risk for a smaller dress size.

Here are my favourite 4 tips to a healthy detox:

1. Start with your diet

Eliminate all refined foods: no white grains, white sugars, processed foods, fried foods, dairy, artificial sweetener or alcohol (trust me I know this last one is hard, I love my #winenotweekends). But these foods cause inflammation and bloating, so it's best to opt-in a clean diet with lots of colourful fruits and veg, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes.

2. Get moving

Whether it's choosing to take the stairs instead of the elevator, or going for a walk after dinner instead of #Netflixandchill it's so important to get our body moving. I like going for a run or doing HIIT workout in the morning before work. It feels so good to start your day having finished your workout, and by putting yourself first.

3. Hydrate

This is so so important. Especially when you're on a cleanse like this SkinnyMint teatox where you're frequenting the bathroom more than normal. Your body is flushing a lot of excess water and you want to make sure that you're staying well hydrated. It's especially important with this summer heat, and the extra activity that we talked about in tip 2. My Tone it Up trainers recommend to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water per day. Ex: 150lb = 75 oz/2.2L of water.

4. Sleep

This is key to a healthy cleanse, and lifestyle for that matter. Instead of watching another epi of West World, wind down in bed with a book and try to get 8 hours of sleep a night. I recently listened to a podcast about sleep and how important it is for our health, metabolism, longevity, and brain function. It's crazy! But also, when we get a good nights sleep we are more inclined to make the right food choices. When I'm sleep deprived I tend to reach for those sugary snacks and high carb foods as an energy boost, and this is a big no!

The SkinnyMint program also comes with lots of easy and healthy lifestyle tips to see best results on your cleanse: like walking a minimum of 30 minutes every day, swapping white grain products for brown to limit bloating, having an early dinner at 25% of your daily calories, and getting a good nights sleep. They also recommended against going hungry, and to opt in for healthy snacks like cashews, oatmeal, and pineapple. At the end of the day it's about caring for our body and fuelling it in the right ways to get the best results: a healthy diet, an active lifestyle, and a little teatox for good measure.

Now, let's talk about how this teatox worked: SkinnyMint sent me 28 sachets of Morning Boost teatox, followed by 28 sachets of a Night Cleanse teatox. It's a 2 easy step program that requires you to take the Morning Boost teatox at breakfast, followed with the Night Cleanse every other night before bed. It's super simple. The Morning Boost sachet is made up of green tea, mate leaf, nettle, dandelion and guarana. The Night Cleanse is made up of senna leaf, ginger root, orange leaf, lemongrass, peppermint, liquorice, Hawthorne and psyllium.

As for taste, the Morning Boost teatox is delicious! In fact I was surprised by just how tasty this tea was. It has a subtle sweetness and tropical vibes. Typically I find detox teas to be really earthy with a slight liquorice taste, but this is fresh. I would drink this tea regardless of being on a cleanse it's so delicious. The night cleanse does have more typical detox flavour - it's earthy from the lemongrass and peppermint, and has a slight liquorice taste from the liquorice root. Even still, it's quite enjoyable. I did notice however that I had to follow the recommended steeping time otherwise I found the liquorice to get too strong.

As for results - this tea definitely helped me to de-bloat. My stomach is so flat! Typically it gets a bit bloated looking by end of day, but on this tea there is none whatsoever. I am loving my belly from every angle! So much that I want to throw on my bathing suit and snap some photos because this flat belly is worth noting. I'm not sure that I've lost any weight necessary, which to be honest wasn't my goal. As I said, I live a healthy lifestyle, and so weight-loss isn't a big factor for me, but the de-bloat is evident.

This tea definitely works. Without getting too much into detail let's just say I was having an influx of bowel movements after just 24 hours on this tea. I will tell you that the first couple days I was frequenting the bathroom a lot. Luckily I work from home so a bathroom was only a few steps away. I don't know whether the effects were enhanced by my healthy diet, or if it was the magic of the tea. But if you're looking for a cleanse this tea certainly does the trick. I also wonder if it would have been lessened had I only taken the Morning Boost. The Evening Cleanse has senna leaf in it (popular for being a natural laxative) and psyllium which I will often add to smoothies to help with bowel movements in trying times. But after the first couple days bathroom frequents become a more normal rhythm. So with that said, if you're worried of having the same reaction as me I'd recommend starting the teatox on the weekend.

But what makes me a supporter of SkinnyMint teatox is not just because it works. I like their company mantra. They value at the forefront taking caring for our bodies instead of weight-loss. Their teas are all-natural and safe. They recommend ways to best care for your body, through a healthy diet and active lifestyle, and a healthy detox from time to time to keep us on track. That's a company a can get behind.

And I think this message is key! Honestly I'm not sure this cleanse would work to the same degree had I not made the conscious decision to eat healthy too. For breakfast I opted in for chia pudding, or a coconut yogurt parfait. Lunch time would be a healthy salad or my green detox smoothie, and dinner a rainbow buddha bowl, green salad and the like. And if I got hungry between meals I opted in for SkinnyMint's suggestions above, or pink hummus on whole grain toast or rice cakes. I think it's important when thinking of a cleanse to look at the big picture - teatox is part of the story, it's the addition of a healthy diet and active lifestyle that's going to warrant the best results.
