This breakfast recipe is one that everybody needs to have for Christmas day - the Best Breakfast Apple Crumble! It's a recipe you can easily whip together for a large and eager crowd on, Christmas morning. And is one that will put everyone in the holiday spirit!

I made this crumble last weekend for breakfast, as we began to decorate our home and get into the Christmas mood. My mum is visiting me from Canada right now, and I made this for her and Mitch. Actually, it seems whenever she comes I get into the spirit of making crumble - you may remember my Forgotten Fruit Crumble recipe I made the last time she was here. And I feel as though this coincidental occurrences of making crumble when mum's over is more than just by chance. In my family there was never a sweet treat more frequented and adored than a classic fruit crumble. For breakfast or dessert! So I have come to believe that making apple crumble is a perfect family ritual that should be celebrated at any family gathering. And I've decided that this brilliant breakfast crumble will be a new Christmas family tradition!

Because what better time to be enjoying a warm and gooey crumble than on Christmas morning? A beautifully baked dish with holiday spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, warmed in the oven until the sides and sizzling and caramelized. The golden and crunchy nut and oat topping smothered over a thick inner of pipping hot apples. Can Christmas day please come faster!? (Er - I take it back, I have waaaay to much shopping to do!). But not only does the beautiful breakfast bode so well with loved ones, it's a cooks favourite as well! That's because there is no simpler task than baking this crowd-pleasing dish. It can be prepare the night before, it isn't stringent to strict baking measurements, and can be pretty much be abandoned in the oven to do as it pleases for 45 minutes until the timer goes off! Heck, you don't even need to buy new fruit! You see that old forgotten fruit that's been left in your fruit basket for the past 7-10 days? Yah, those sad looking apples that are starting to shrivel. They're perfect for this recipe! And of course you can always sub the apples for whatever forgotten fruit you have on hand - pears are perfect in this recipe, and frozen fruit works well too!

I promise you, the ease and deliciousness of this recipe was a gift from Santa for the holidays. When so many other things are on our minds for Christmas Day: presents to wrap, stockings to stuff, cards to write, oh and don't forget that 4-course dinner to cook. So why not take advantage of this holiday miracle crumble that you can whip together with little effort and lots of compliments? You can even get some little elves into the kitchen to help with the peeling process if you like. They never said Santa did it all on his own.

But really, this Holiday Apple Crumble was made with the busy-bees in mind. To help you start Christmas morning stress-free, with a delicious holiday breakfast that will be loved by all. A crumble that perfectly depicts family gathering, warmth and tradition! I can't think of a more perfect dessert for the occasion.

Serves: 6-8 | Prep Time: 40 mins | Cook Time: 30-45 mins

Ingredients:

  • Apple Pie Compote x2

  • 1000g (approx. 8 apples)

  • 1/2 cup coconut sugar

  • 2 cups water, plus more if needed

  • the juice of 1 lemon

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 4 tbsp buckwheat flour (or all-purpose flour)

  • 1/4 cup raisins (optional)

  • 1 cup oats

  • 1/4 cup almond meal (ground almonds)

  • 1/4 cup hazelnut meal (ground hazelnuts)

  • 1/2 cup pecans, coarsely chopped

  • 4 tbsp coconut sugar, or brown sugar

  • pinch salt

  • 4 tbsp coconut oil, melted

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350F (180C). Peel and core your apples, and cut into thin slices.

  2. Toss your apples into a saucepan with coconut sugar, water, lemon juice, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.

  3. Bring apples to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes.

*Note: Apple Crumble can be made the night before and served cold, or reheat in the oven at 350F (180C) for 20 minutes, or until warm before serving.
