Creamy Golden Milk

It's no surprise that turmeric has become the superfood sensation of 2016 - everywhere you look people are dabbling in the realm of turmeric inspired plates. I myself have even become victim to its spell. With turmeric mango smoothies, soups, and generally adding it to just about every recipe possible! I am a completely under its spell; hypnotized by its golden colour, promising heath benefits, and taste!

But not only has it become a profound choice for the health conscious consumers - it's totally trendy too. And amongst this new wave of trendy turmeric comes Golden Milk. You may have already noticed this pretty little milk flooding Pinterest walls and Instagram pages. The trendiest Vancouver juiceries are bottling the golden liquid by the minute. It's showcased in feeds, amongst loyal customers posing with the pretty drink, golden milk in hand, and a glimpse of their vintage jeans and white tee. Golden lattes are next in kin to the bottled stuff. The creamiest and dreamiest fluffy milk appearing in photos of minimalist coffee shops with a blurred background of mixed metal coffee grinders, exposed brick and teak wood shelving. The promise of chic, healthful and branché wrapped into these picturesque posts have me convinced this drink deserves its golden title.

Unfortunately the golden milk trend has yet to hit Lille. Although I must say I am elated by how popular nut milk is becoming here! It's getting harder and harder to buy it in grocery stores for the best reason: because it's always sold out! Last weekend I was also visiting an Organic expo at Lille Palais and it was flourishing with busy booths devoted to various nut milk types from A-H (Almond to Hazelnut). Golden Milk, however, is still an Instagram dream away... but that has yet to stop me. So, like usual, I went to making it myself. Starting by making traditional almond milk, and then infusing it with the golden spices: turmeric, cinnamon, ginger and the like. And after trying it myself....they are totally right! This milky drink wins 1st place. Golden milk is a heavenly blend of mulled perfection, offering creamy richness and spice. It's perfect for the holiday season as well, offering familiar mulled flavours like a mulled wine or cider, but in a milky form so we can indulge all day and before bed. This drink is as warm, cozy and as christmasy as it gets.

So it's not surprising to say that I've been enjoying this milky drink since the 1st of December. Like a creamy vegan eggnog, but not as heavy. And although I may be enjoying this milk in the comfort of my own home, in my stripped pyjamas beside our tiny xmas tree. It's perfect for me. Until I can discover that cool coffee shop in Lille flocked with trendy students, this picture will do juuuust fine.
